Independence Day Flags Not Really Flying In Rural America

Cullman County writer E.R. McWhorter was inspired to pen the following story/observation/editorial after completing a family road trip over the Independence Day weekend:

“Flags waving in the winds, driving through another rural town in the many states of this America we live. Seeing the shuttered up houses if you can even call them that. The shacks and shanties that make up an impoverished community echoing of a bright past that was never there.

Poverty looming in the cracks while big beautiful lake houses command more money than these poor families will ever make in a lifetime of back-breaking labor. Taking the best years of their life shut in a factory in return for such a meager existence that even the shack they live is abandoned… Left to another way of life altogether.

The roads ragged edges succumb to the scant patches used to make the appearance of upkeep.

The school house that makes sure they have four baseball fields but lack instruments for a band … And can’t hire good teachers enough to raise these children out of poverty .

The gut wrenching cycles that continue in small town America is largely ignored. Basic utilities for modern life have skipped huge masses of people in these spots of America. There is barely a cell phone signal; Internet service is dial-up, if you can get it at all.

How can we raise our citizens to be leaders of the world when we leave them paralyzed under a weight that cannot be lifted … And then we forget about them.

Forward thinking and motivation from our leaders must happen.

We need to embrace the social structures we have to lift people up. We need to demand living wages, healthcare, and housing for all people. Educate everyone regardless of their ability to pay. Anyone who wants to learn should be allowed the opportunities to do so.

The truth is America is crumbling… And we can do better.

When you think about our independence this Fourth of July, think about what made us great and how we can help our fellow man and therefore help ourselves.”
