“I look back at what they all have accomplished … and at what my sons are currently accomplishing…and I think, “yes, this is what I need to. It’s my turn to serve.” – Mary Hovater Seeks First Term On Cullman City School Board

In her first campaign for elective office, Mary Hovater is seeking a seat on the Cullman City Board of Education representing Place 1.

She has two children: James (19) who graduated from Cullman High School in 2015. He is now a sophomore at Mississippi State University. Hayden (16) is junior at Cullman High School this year.

She is currently employed by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) as a Technical Manager.

Hovater is also the Cullman High School Bearcat Band Booster President and has been so for the last three years.

She grew up in Cullman. She is a proud product of the Cullman City school system. Hovater feels those two things helped shaped her into becoming the person she has become today. Along with her parents’ steadfast guidance and Church family’s support, she has a deep, innate need to give back to the community:

“I will work hard to do whatever it takes to support our dedicated teachers, staff, and students and parents of our outstanding city school system. I humbly ask for your vote. I will need your support in my endeavor to be there for you, the teacher that wears too many hats; for you, the parents and students who need someone to listen; for you, the administration, that needs to know someone will be there to help provide leadership with a level head in good times and tough times, when there are fun events and when there are issues.

I have been involved in so many community activities, as  I know you can tell by the list in the pamphlet. While maybe sometimes I took on too many, serving this community is just that important to me.  I feel that when you are given so very much you should in turn give. This is what I plan to do as a member of the City School  Board. My family, my extended family, my children and myself all went through the Cullman School System. I look back at what they all have accomplished … and at what my sons are currently accomplishing…and I think, “yes, this is what I need to. It’s my turn to serve.”

Hovater feels one of her most important biographical experiences recently has been her willingness to be proactive and preparatory about increasing her skills and understanding ahead of potentially being elected to the Board of Education:

“As a part of my outreach and preparation for a position on the school board, I have implemented a Listening Tour. This tour is exactly what it sounds like, just me listening. Over the last few months, I have had an opportunity to meet with principles, teachers, parents, and students. I have asked them to educate me on all aspects of their schools from their prospective. Most everyone has been very generous with their time and insights. I feel that if I want to go the best job I can as a school board member, I need to be educated in the inner workings of our schools. It’s important to do homework!”
