Cullman County Emergency Management Agency Director Phyllis Little advised the Cullman County Commission on Tuesday of public safety and legal liability issues related to the use of the Cullman County Courthouse as a storm shelter during extreme weather outbreaks.

After considering her recommendations, the Cullman County Commission unanimously voted to effectively decommission the Courthouse as a storm shelter, thereby removing it from the Cullman EMA list of public-use storm shelters (see updated list below).

The courthouse basement hallway has traditionally been utilized for county residents to find refugee during tornado watches and warnings.

Going forward during extreme weather, area residents have two alternative options to replace the former Courthouse safe space:

Across From Cullman Fairgrounds

1511 Sportsman Lake Road

Capacity = 396+ people

CCCDC Beech Center (basement)

1803 Beech Avenue SW

Capacity = 150+ people
