Multiple firefighting agencies have responded to a request from Cullman e-911 involving an out of control grass fire along the 1000 block of Highway 69 North.

With large plumes of dark black smoke clearly visible from downtown Cullman, firefighters from Berlin Fire & Rescue were first to arrive on the scene.

These responders quickly discovered the blaze was far more than a common grass fire. The found eight separate vehicles fully involved in a fire along with multiple used tires behind the popular Shaddix Motors facility.

Strong winds gusting up to 25 mph from the southwest clearly accelerated the inferno.

Mutual aid responses soon followed the initial arrival with Cullman Fire Rescue, Gold Ridge & Fairview Fire Departments participating in the multiple angle fire attack.

All eight vehicles involved in the fire have been largely destroyed. It is likely each will ultimately be deemed a total loss.

A Cullman Electric Cooperative power pole was squarely in the middle of the fire. While it remains standing, a line crew is staged at the address to inspect for damages and make repairs, if required.

We spoke briefly with Berlin Fire Chief Ralph Laney (who manned a water hose at the front line of the fire):

“That was a heckuva fire. We are not certain how this got started. These strong wind aren’t helping a thing.”

One lane of traffic (southbound) on Highway 69 has been partially blocked to accommodate a wide variety of emergency response vehicles.

Motorists are being detoured around the blockage at very slow speeds. If you are traveling through this area, it would be wise to make alternate plans.

Cullman Emergency Medical Services has a medical team staged on the scene. Fortunately, there are no reports of injuries.

There appears to be no damage to nearby structures at Shaddix Motors. A rapid response by all agencies involved has kept a very bad situation from getting far worse.
