Two Accidents Three Minutes Apart Results In Dual I-65 Fatalities

One Victim A Pedestrian; Two Children Transported To Children’s Hospital

A motor vehicle crash involving a 1999 Jeep Cherokee and 2008 BMW occurred at 8:00 pm Sunday night along Interstate 65 just south of the Cullman-Blount County line.

Approximately 3 minutes later, a second accident involving 1988 Toyota pick-up truck and pedestrian took place nearby.

Emergency response agencies from both Blount and Cullman County worked this extraordinarily tragic scene near the 290-mile marker.

Two fatalities occurred, one individual dying in each accident.

Multiple Troopers from the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) rushed to the scene where a full investigation ensued. While a full report on circumstances surrounding both accidents is not yet available, it is believed the second fatality incident was at least partially interrelated to the first crash.

Traci Lyn Morgan (47) of Lake View, AL was the fatality victim in the first wreck as an occupant in the BMW. She was struck by the Jeep driven by Angeletha Maxwell (25) of Tuscaloosa. Morgan was not wearing a seat belt. She was pronounced dead at the scene by Blount County Coroner, John Mark Vaugh.

Maxwell sustained injuries in the crash. She was transported to University of Alabama Trauma Center in Birmingham.

Three minutes later in a seperate incident, Keera Michelle Shepherd (24) of Tuscaloosa was the pedestrian struck and killed by the Toyota as she exited her Jeep Cherokee onto the interstate. She too was pronounced dead at the scene by the Coroner.

Justin May (29) of Cullman was the driver of the Toyota involved in this pedestrian accident. He was uninjured in the incident.

Two children were also injured in these crashes. Both were transported to Children’s of Alabama Hospital in Birmingham.

Southbound lanes of Interstate 65 were slowed for several hours after these wrecks. The right shoulder emergency lane of I-65 was eventually opened after a period of time to allow very slow moving traffic through the area.

Many motorists utilized Highway 31 through Hanceville as an alternate route to get back onto I-65.

Nothing further is available as Alabama State Troopers continue to investigate these tragic mishaps.
