Healthy families help ensure safe children.

Most all important agencies and organizations involved with the health and safety of children across Cullman County converged Saturday morning at Sportsman Lake Park.

The gathering was entitled Safe Kids Expo. It has become an annual tradition in Cullman led by the sponsorship of Brookes’ Place – Child Advocacy of Cullman.

Brooks’ Place operates with the community goal of working together to nurture hope and healing in the lives of children and families impacted by child sexual abuse.

Perfect spring weather brought out hundreds of families to Sportsman Lake Park. The event was free for children up to 12 years of age (who were accompanied by their parents or guardians).

Javon Daniel of Cullman Caring for Kids explained the essence of Safe Kids Expo in the days leading up to the event:

Sportsman Lake Park had all the usual amenities open and freely available: fishing, paddle boats, miniature golf, playground equipment, moonwalks, super slide, plus, snow cones, popcorn, hot dogs and soft drinks for all children at no charge.

The Cullman chapter of the American Red Cross, the Cullman County Sheriff’s Office, Cullman Fire Rescue, Cullman Police Department and the remnants of the Rescue Squad brought out personnel and apparatus to bring an air of protection and invincibility to the expo’s atmosphere.

Children enjoyed interacting with the emergency response members staffing each agency’s exhibition. The fully extended ladder truck from Cullman Fire Rescue and the Police Department’s aviation unit helicopter received heavy traffic from awed youngsters.

Wallace State Community College was among several other organizations on hand to teach kids about safety in a myriad of forms. Their puppet show and temporary tattoo exhibit drew very big crowds.

Elsewhere at the park, from train rides to duck feeding and everything else enticed attendees ready for their first taste of a true springlike weekend outdoors.
