Puppy Saves Lives In Overnight House Fire

At the peak of the fire, flames roared several feet above the mobile home with thick, low-lying smoke distributed throughout the neighborhood.

Multiple firefighting units from Walter, Hanceville and Holly Pond Fire Departments responded to a Cullman e-911 call regarding a house fire around 3 am.

Upon arrival at the scene, firefighters discovered a single-wide mobile home fully involved in flames. The location of the fire was along the 00 block of County Road 655 in the Walter community just south of Highway 91.

At the peak of the fire, flames roared several feet above the mobile home with thick, low-lying smoke distributed throughout the neighborhood.

A young couple was occupants in the home along with a puppy. The couple was apparently fast asleep during the initial stages of the blaze. Firefighters at the scene attribute the puppy with awakening the sleeping residents in reaction to the fire. As a result, both humans and canine were able to exit the dwelling before becoming overcome by smoke and fire.

At dawn, a handful of firefighters remains at the address removing aluminum siding and extinguishing the lingering hotspots. One-half the structure is burned down to the steel under beams with the remainder of the home totaling destroyed by fire, smoke and water damage.

There have been no reports of physical injuries associated with the incident.

Traffic along nearby Highway 91 was unaffected by the fire.
