Former Commissioner James Graves Arrested Forced Sexual Abuse Minor

Mr. Graves is currently being held at the Cullman County Detention Center on a $15,000 cash bond.

Cullman County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) Investigators arrested James Donald Graves (74) of Vinemont today.

Graves is a former Cullman County Associate Commissioner. He is also an active member of the Cullman County Republic Executive Committee.

A minor age victim alleging forced performance of a sexual act came forward with a report to investigators with CCSO. The minor informed investigators James Donald Graves ‘made the victim perform a sexual act’.

Following a swift investigation by Investigators, CCSO discovered that Mr. Graves had sexually molested the individual minor on more than one occasion. The repeated molestation allegations were confronted during an interview process with Mr. Graves who confirmed the allegations.

According to CCSO, after the interview ‘there was no doubt a sexual crime had been committed by the suspect’.

At that point, investigators contacted the Cullman County District Attorney’s Office. They obtained a warrant of arrest for Sexual Abuse 1st Degree against Graves. This charge is a felony.

CCSO has elected to NOT release any further details of the molestations and sexual abuse due to the graphic nature of this crime.

Cullman County Sheriff Matt Gentry had these thoughts following the arrest:

“The protection of our young people is one of our most important responsibilities as law enforcement officers. As soon as the victim came forward our investigators interviewed the suspect and we obtained a warrant after consulting with the DA’s office due to the evidence being so overwhelming against the suspect.

I would like to thank our investigators for their prompt and immediate work in this case.”

A statement from the Cullman County Republican Party in regards to the status of Mr. Graves on their Executive Committee is expected.
