Massive Immediate Action Limits Hanceville Apartment House Fire
“… all parties involved prevented major fire damage (& potential injuries) from occurring.”
Multiple emergency response agencies converged on a multiple family apartment building in the City of Hanceville around 5 pm today. They were dispatched by Cullman e911 based upon a call reporting an active structure fire at the Skipper’s Landing Apartments.
The address of this housing complex is 640 Edmondson Road NE directly behind the much trafficked Dale’s Convenience Store on Highway 91.
The response to this fire was immediate and massive with multiple crews from the Hanceville Police Department, Hanceville Fire & Rescue, and Johnsons Crossing Volunteer Fire & EMS Department along with a medical team from Cullman Emergency Medical Services active at the scene within minutes of the original call.
According to Captain Jacob Hudson who led the firefighter effort, the blaze itself began in the kitchen area of an upstairs apartment. Calm, fast remedial action by one of the apartment’s occupants was instrumental in preventing the spread of the fire elsewhere into the apartment and beyond.
One resident has received minor medical retreatment at the scene. His condition did not warrant transport to Cullman Regional.
No firefighters were injured in the effort, although extreme outdoor heat made the entire operation more challenging than normal.
We spoke with Hanceville Fire Chief Rodger Green immediately after the fire was confirmed 100% extinguished:
“This is a case where heads up action by a resident along with a super fast response by all parties involved prevented major fire damage (and potential injuries) from occurring. The other occupants in the complex were very cooperative, and they all did the right thing as emergency response vehicles arrived and we got to work. This unit will have some smoke and heat damage, but that is it. I am proud of the effort of everyone who took part in this operation.”
