In this interview, Mikus and Edwards describe exactly what happened in the early morning hours of Tuesday, July 11th, in their own words.

Gary Mikus and Chris Edwards are members of Cullman Fire Rescue Engine 1 Crew. This team performed a double rescue during the tragic fatality fire that occurred last week along County Road 706 near Stone Bridge Farms.

With firefighters from Johnsons Crossing providing the primary water suppression coverage, Lieutenant Gary Mikus with the assistance of Wade Miller and Chris Edwards decided to attempt a search and rescue operation inside the burning home. The mission was to locate and remove the two entrapped victims.

Lieutenant Mikus began an active search in the north end of the home first. His efforts found a single female in what is believed to be one of the home’s bedrooms. She was unresponsive on the floor. Mikus removed her from the home through an open window with Miller awaiting the handoff on the exterior of the structure.

Next, Mikus accepted the calculated risk of entering the home through the front door in search of the second victim. He faced a wall of active fire to his right as he entered the foyer. Despite zero visibility due to blackout levels of smoke, he searched by feel along the floors and walls of the burning house.

Amazingly – considering the conditions inside the home – Mikus finally located a second female victim.

As with the earlier victim, he was able to carry her out of the home to the waiting arms of Miller.

Unsure if anyone else was inside the home, Mikus returned into the inferno for a third attempt at rescue. Ultimately, he found no one else. He exited the structure to switch roles and join the larger firefight in progress.

In this interview, Mikus and Edwards describe exactly what happened in the early morning hours of Tuesday, July 11th, in their own words:
