Dangerous Heat & Oppressive Humidity Expected Over Cullman For 3rd Straight Day

The National Weather Service in Huntsville has issued an Heat Advisory for Cullman County (and most of the Tennessee Valley) from 11 am to 7 pm today, Sunday, July 23, 2017. This is the 3rd day in a row of this dangerous combination of heat and humidity.

An area of high pressure continues to produce a dome of heat and humidity across the Cullman.

The combination of this heat and humidity will create some dangerously high temperatures and heat index values across much of the Tennessee Valley today. Daytime highs will climb into the low-to-mid 90’s (92°-94° expected in Cullman County) with heat indices peaking between 105° to 109° degrees once again during the afternoon.

Given the very humid air mass, heat index values over 100 degrees may develop by late morning and could last well into the evening.

By Monday, a slightly cooler air mass should provide some limited relief from oppressive heat and alleviate the need for another
Heat Advisory.

IMPACTS

The combination of heat and humidity will lead to an increased risk for heat related illnesses, including heat stroke and dehydration for those outside or without air conditioning. Additionally, car interiors will reach lethal temperatures within a matter of minutes.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS

  • Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside.
  • When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to the evening period.
  • Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
  • Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when possible and
    drink plenty of water.
  • Check up on relatives and neighbors.
  • Absolutely do not leave children or pets unattended in vehicles!

AT WORK

To reduce risk during outdoor work the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks
in shaded or air conditioned environments.

Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location.

Heat stroke is an emergency, CALL 911.
