It was a big night at the regularly scheduled monthly meeting of the Cullman County Fire Association.

Alabama Forestry Specialist Albert Mayo was on hand to issue checks to all qualifying volunteer fire departments across Cullman County. Right at 20 different departments were represented.

Each department in the County will receive over $1,000 from the Alabama Forestry Commission.

The Alabama Forestry Commission (AFC) is committed to providing assistance to volunteer fire departments (VFDs) so they can help Forestry respond to wildfires that occur across Alabama. With an average of 3,500 wildfires burning more than 44,000 acres annually (10-year trend, SGSF 2010), the minimal AFC staff of 175 firefighters would quickly be overwhelmed without VFD’s assistance. Their quick response allows them to contain wildfires until AFC arrives so they don’t become large incidents as we see so many times in the western states.

The Alabama Legislature appropriates funds and directs the Alabama Forestry Commission to administer the program and distribute funds to every active volunteer fire department in Alabama. Fire departments must use these funds in accordance with the Alabama Department of Examiners of Public Accounts’ Financial and Compliance Guidelines for Volunteer Fire Departments.

Approximately one million dollars are distributed to approximately one thousand fire departments each year.

The Cullman County Fire Association is led by these men:

Joe Golden – President (Baileyton)

David Scott – 1st Vice-President (Good Hope)

Brett Rodgers – 2nd Vice-President (Sardis)
