In this interview with Cullman County Commission Chairman Kenneth Walker, we take the long plunge down the Smith Lake Park boat ramp story that we broke almost 2 weeks ago.

The at the most recent meeting of the County Commission, the Chairman and Commissioners Kerry Watson and Garry Marchman unveiled plans for a massive expansion of the now 2-lane boat ramp at Smith Lake Park up to 6-lanes.

To accomplish this expansion AND make the entire project suitable to the United States Corps of Engineers and Alabama Power, the entire old ramp and parking lot will be completely removed. Once the asphalt and concrete are gone, massive amounts of earthwork and grading will commence. The goals and requirement are to make both the new boat ramps and the remodeled parking lot lie at a 7-degree grade.

This will make the entire facility ADA compliant (American Disabilities Act). And that is only Phase 1.

There will also be a Phase 2: This separate but interlinked project will create a second parking to the west of the current location connected by a new, paved roadway. This will ultimately lead to TWO very large, trailer accessible and ready parking lots. In this Phase 2, there will also be a new walkway and bridge complex leading over to the new boat ramps as well as two new boat docking piers that extend out into the lake.

This means no more docking on the muddy beach!

Phase 1 will take place in 2018; Phase 2 is expected in 2019.
