The first contest of our GAME OF THE WEEK doubleheader featured an undefeated, #19 ranked 6A ALBERTVILLE Aggies squad coming into Oliver Woodard Stadium to face the still as yet unknown quantity 6A CULLMAN Bearcats.

The ALBERTVILLE Aggies had defeated their first two opponents of the season by an average of 35 points per game.

The CULLMAN Bearcats had been in close games to go 1-1.

This contest was a litmus test to see if ALBERTVILLE was a legit, ranking worthy team AND provide CULLMAN a good marker on exactly where the Bearcats stand in 2017 statewide landscape.

Our Cullman High School sports specialist – Jamie Speakman – covered the action at Oliver Woodward Stadium along with our guest sports photographer of Brad Baugh of Jennifer Rochelle Photography and UAB Blazer fame.

We sat in on a raucous pep rally at Cullman gymnasium at 2:30 pm Friday:

The pre-game festivities were electric at Oliver Woodard with temperatures around 70 under crystal clear skies:

The first quarter was a defense dominate 12 minutes. Albertville managed only a field goal by Oliver Diaz on their first possession of the game, and that was it.

The second quarter provided no appreciable change for the Bearcat defense. They remained virtually impenetrable with multiple big time stops that led to a near shutout first half.

The Cullman offensive could do little against the Albertville defense except for a 33-yard Miguel Tizapa field goal at the 4:23-minute mark. It appeared a 3-3 deadlock would be the case at halftime.

The field goal was courtesy of a pass interception by safety Seth Gable.

About as minute later though, the Bearcat defense limited the Aggies to a three play and punt drive. The home team blocked the punt.

Cullman quarterback Jennings quickly capitalized on the turnover with a sharp throw to Carson Freeman for a touchdown and a 10-3 lead.

Then, after getting the ball back from Albertville, Ezra Burks carried a short pass into the end zone with 15 seconds to go. The 17-3 halftime lead seemed like a rout in the making.

The Cullman defense kept the pace up through most of the second half.

They jammed up Albertville early in the 3rd quarter, forcing a punt. A weak punt attempt led to outstanding field position allowing the Bearcats to score on an Ezra Burks run from 5-years out.

At 24-3, the Aggies seemed to lose their attitude with a collective emotional let down palpable from their sideline.

A Kasey Murphree interception and return to the Albertville 11-yard line set up the Bearcat offense once again. Burks waltzed into the end zone behind an armada of blockers.

At 31-3, the game was effectively over at the 8-minute mark of the 4th quarter.

Aggie quarterback Tyler Comeau nailed a garbage time pass to Jake Millican for a 38-yard touchdown to end the night’s scoring activity.

The game ended with the Cullman Bearcats validated as a formidable football team when the defensive plays to its potential. It also left Albertville having to rethink their fast 2-0 start to the season as they left Olver Woodward at 2-1.

This victory over Albertville was Cullman’s first region opening win in four years.

Albertville will face Brewer next Friday night.

The Bearcats travel to Oxford for what may be the most challenging game on their schedule.

A win there against the Class 6A and #4 ranked Yellow Jackets would have profound, positive ramifications for the rest of the season.
