Cullman Electric Coop Lineman Deploy To Florida Tackling Hurricane Irma Repairs

by | Sep 12, 2017 | Business, Community, County News, Cullman, People, Public Safety, United States

Six (6) linemen from the Cullman Electric Cooperative along with the three (3) trucks have been deployed Lake City, FL.

Their mission is to work directly with the Clay Electric Cooperative located near Gainesville.

According to Brian Lacy of Cullman Electric Cooperative, Clay Electric Cooperative has 170,000 meters on its system. More than 90% of their system is without electrical power directly related to the extensive damage rendered by Hurricane Irma.

As they prepared to leave the Coop office this morning on Eva Road, pictured from left above are linemen:

This is just one example of some of the challenges these linemen will face in Florida. This is a Clay County Cooperative Ridgewood Substation in Orange Park, FL.

Ultimately, crews from fifteen of Alabama’s rural electric cooperatives are being sent to help five Florida electric cooperatives with power restoration in the wake of Hurricane Irma.

A total of 200 personnel are on their way from Alabama to help their fellow cooperatives in areas affected by the hurricane which left more than 75 percent of Floridians without electricity.

Fred Braswell, president, and CEO of the Alabama Rural Electric Association, which represents Alabama’s 22 electric cooperatives had these thoughts:

“In addition, five other crews are on standby to be sent to Florida or Georgia, as they are needed or requested. Alabama’s cooperatives are always willing to help our fellow cooperatives when there is a need.”

Alabama’s rural electric cooperatives deliver power to more than 1 million people; they maintain more than 71,000 miles of power line.
