Week 6: Cullman Area Football Games

Our GAME OF THE WEEK features the Cold Springs Eagles on the road facing the Good Hope Raiders at James W. Shabel Stadium.

The Eagles are coached by Larry Bishop; the Raiders are led by Alan Scott.

As a Class 2A school, COLD SPRINGS moves up significantly on the size-of-competition scale to face Class 4A Good Hope. The Eagles come into this game with a nice victory over Berry along with three defeats and a bye week. Their margins of loss have been 40 points per game on average. Obviously, the burden tonight falls on the Eagles defense. Cold Springs is 26-4 when holding its opponents to 10 point or less since 2000.

Mercurial best describes this year’s GOOD HOPE team through Week 5. They started the season with a Week 1 open date. That was followed up with two wins and two losses. They looked spectacular in a large-scale shutout of Vinemont, very capable against a stout, ranked Fayette County team, like destiny’s child in a shocking last-second win over Hamilton and then wholly pedestrian against Cordova last week.

The Raiders lost to the Eagles 39-42 last year. The players still remaining on this Good Hope roster no doubt recall that loss and will seek to rectify it this evening. Cold Springs players still on the team will likely draw some confidence from that win in 2016.

This is a long running rivalry with 36 football games played between the two schools since the beginning of recorded history. The Eagles have won 8 of those games; Good Hope was a victor in 27 with one tie game.

Another game we will be watching closely is the CULLMAN Bearcats entertaining the tough #4 ranked, Class 4A FAYETTE COUNTY Tigers. After a remarkably clutch win last week against Fort Payne and the announced retirement of their head coach, the Bearcats are at 3-2 with a chance to make a good season even better tonight..

Our Cullman High School sports specialist – Jamie Speakman – will be covering that game action from Oliver Woodard Stadium.

Tim Collins will broadcast our Cold Springs vs Good Hope ‘Game of the Week’ live during the 1st and 4th quarters (assuming broadband connection in Good Hope cooperates).
