Warming Center Opening At Donald E Green Senior Center

The City of Cullman in conjunction with the Donald E. Green Senior Center and volunteers from the Cullman County VOAD (Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster) are opening a warming center through Saturday.

The Center is located at 1625 Cleveland Avenue SW in the City of Cullman.

Doors will be open from 3 pm until 8 am each day.

This facility is NOT a full-time shelter. It is for people needing to come indoors and warm-up during this sustained, inclement arctic weather blast. Regularly scheduled Senior activities will proceed daily from 8 am to 3 pm.

Chris Hopper, President of the Cullman County VOAD explains the details:

“This is not a shelter per se. Instead, it is a place for people to come warm-up. We will have running water, restroom facilities, hot coffee, vending machines, and blankets. There is a Jack’s down the street, if people need more substantial food.”

City of Cullman Mayor Woody Jacobs is also intimately involved with this project:

“We are opening the Donald E. Green Center at 3 pm New Year’s Day as a warming center for area residents who may be without suitable heat and shelter in the face of this extreme cold spell. Folks can enter through the side door (the one with a canopy).

We will have Volunteers from VOAD on hand to help out.

I believe it is important for the City of Cullman to offer this sort of assistance to citizens in need. Hypothermia is a real danger in this weather for people who are unprotected or just need to warm-up, for whatever reason.

I am extremely impressed with all the volunteer support we are getting for this effort. Seeing citizens come together during a time of need like this is one of the many things that make Cullman great.”
