Based upon a report by Erik Harris of the North Jefferson County News, now former Gardendale head football coach Matt Plunkett will take over the reigns of the Cullman Bearcat high school football program.

A Special Called Cullman City Board of Education meeting has been called for 8:00 am Friday. It is assumed board members will vote to hire Plunkett and make the official announcement at that time.

Plunkett’s five seasons at Gardendale have yielded a 37-22 record at Gardendale from 2013 to 2017. He led the Rockets to four straight playoff appearances following his opening season.

Plunket told Harris:

“It’s been fun. We worked really hard here, and these kids did a fantastic job, but I’ve got some deep, deep roots in Cullman County, That’s where I was raised. I have always viewed myself being in Cullman one day later in my career. I honestly didn’t know it would be this early.”

Plunkett will fill the big shoes of longtime Bearcat head coach Mark Britton who led the program for 16 years.

“My daughters were the deciding factor because getting them in a solid school system is fantastic,” he said. “I know there is just a lot of political things going on here with Gardendale and Jefferson County right now and I was just a little unsure about where that was going to lead.”
