Matt Plunkett: Today Is A New Day For Cullman Bearcat Football Matt

Superintendent Susan Patterson and the Cullman City Board Education with a considerable assist from Cullman High School Principal Kim Hall (and her All-Star Selection Committee) has pulled off one of the most remarkable coaching hirings in the recent history of Alabama Class 6A football.

At 8 am this morning, the Cullman City Board of Education made it official; they unanimously approved the hiring of now former Gardendale head football coach, Matt Plunkett.

Plunkett will begin full time coaching duties at Cullman High School on Monday, January 22nd.

Plunkett’s five seasons at Gardendale yielded a 37-22 record from 2013 to 2017. He led the Rockets to four straight playoff appearances. His Gardendale resume is made all the more impressive accomplished in perhaps the toughest 6A Region in the State of Alabama (Region 6). Eventual 2017 6A state champion Pinson Valley plays in that league.

Following the School Board vote, we sat down with the new coach:

Plunkett is a childhood resident of the Joppa area and graduated from Arab High School in Marshall County.

He then attended the University of North Alabama and the University of Alabama. He was a student assistant coach in both programs, “I got coffee for a lot of people.” said a self-deprecating Plunkett.

Coach Plunkett got his first assistant coaching gigs at Pittsburg State University, Carson Newman College and later at Missouri Southern State University. At the collegiate level, Plunkett worked as an offensive coordinator, recruiting coordinator, tight end and wide receivers coach.

In 2010, Plunkett moved to the high school level as an offensive coordinator and one Coach at Magnolia West High School in Magnolia, Texas. He won a state championship while at that institution.

Matt proposed to Allison immediately after that state championship win. Now married, the Plunkett’s have two children, Madison Jane (3) and Makenzie Brooks (1).

Principal Kim Hall in her introduction of Plunkett re-told this quote from the new coach:

“The coaching profession is about leading people to success; I believe this is my strongest asset. A championship work ethic will be displayed on a daily basis and instilled in the life of every person in our program.”

Cullman City School Superintendent Susan Patterson is both relieved the selection process has concluded and excited about the future:

“Cullman High has a long tradition of success in our football program. We are excited to approve the hiring of Coach Matt Plunkett. He has a proven history of success in building a winning program.

We look forward to seeing him build upon our tradition as he works with our student-athletes.

I also want to thank our search committee for their diligence throughout the process. Coach Plunkett will be an asset to our football program, Cullman High, and our community.”
