Polar Plunge Highlights Community Wellness Week

What a great week at Cullman Wellness & Aquatics Center (CWAC). The management of the Center decided to expand upon their usual Community Wellness Day making it a week-long event.

Cullman residents had the opportunity to visit CWAC between January 2nd and 6th. Guests got the opportunity to join CWAC for $50 off any membership with giveaways to members.

Today (Saturday) everyone received free admission to the facility and were treated to a deluxe health fair featuring:

• Alabama Therapeutic Massage
• Alpha Nutrition
• Chick-fil-A
• Cullman Regional Medical Center
• First Source for Women
• Healthy Eats
• Iron Ethos
• Professional Weight Loss Center
• Southern Eats … Meals To Go
• State Farm Shirley Quattlebaum
• Youth Archery

For those of you who were unable to attend, we conducted a walking interview tour of all the vendors. They folks were all fascinating, informative and truly committed to their individual crafts:

We also receive some close-up education on bodywork from the practitioners at Alabama Therapeutic Massage:

The annual highlight reel moment of the Community Wellness Week is the treacherous Polar Bear Plunge in the outdoor main pool area of CWAC.

With two weeks of sustained below normal temperatures, ice formations of 1/4” to 1/2” existed in parts of the Cullman Wellness & Aquatics Center outdoor pool system.

The pool area where this morning’s Polar Plunge took place was ice free (due to circulating pumps). The surface water temperature clocked in at 16 degrees with 36 degrees at the pool floor:

The outdoor temperature and plunge time was 32 degrees with a wind chill of 28.

According to Director of Marketing, Programs, & Events Waid Harbison, this was the most chill Polar Plunge in CWAC history

The usually robust turnout of cold water divers was less than typical. The reduced attendance is believed to be largely due to the recent frigid conditions. Nonetheless, almost 40 polar bears jumped in the pool, many of them under the age of 10:

One lucky polar bear family got to walk away with a one-year membership to the Cullman Wellness & Aquatics Center for their efforts.

It was three-time Polar Bear Plunge participant Lindy Bennefield and her family consisting of two sons, Isaiah & Zeke, as well as two nieces, Madison & Brooklyn:
