Hanceville Teen Charged With Capital Murder In Gadsden

According to a report in the Gadsden Times by reporter Donna Thornton, Tyler Michael Abbott (17) of Hanceville was arrested in connection with the gunshot death of Aaron ‘A.J.’ Huff (18) of Gadsden.

Huff’s death represents Gadsden’s first homicide of 2018.

The shooting death occurred Thursday night.

Abbott has been charged as an adult with capital murder. He is being held without bond in the Etowah County Detention Center.

Another shooting Saturday that injured two have Gadsen citizens up-in-arms about violence in the community. Mayor Sherman Guyton had this statement:

“With the events occurring in our city over the last week. I feel compelled to speak out against the senseless violence. The Gadsden Police Department has been working virtually around the clock to identify those responsible for committing these crimes.

I commend our officers for their quick response and outstanding work identifying and arresting the suspects in these cases. I feel confident that these are isolated incidents that do not represent who we are as a community. We will do whatever is necessary to keep the citizens of Gadsden safe.”

Gadsen Police detectives believe Huff and Abbott knew each other.

It is believed they met in a parking lot where an altercation ensued prior to the shooting at the intersection of Litchfield Avenue and Hoke Street.

Both departed the parking lot after the interaction in separate vehicles. The vehicle in which Huff was a passenger at the intersection and the suspect was in a vehicle behind it.

Thornton reports:

“A gunman got out of the second vehicle, went to the vehicle in which Huff was traveling and shot him. The driver of that vehicle took the Huff to a hospital.”

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing. Detectives working the case expect more charges.

Anyone with information about the crime is asked to contact Det. Autumn Dickson at 256-549-4867.
