Relay For Life Kick Off Event 2018

Cullman County Relay For Life kicked off their 25th year during a gathering at Cullman First Baptist Church on Thursday night.

Relay For Life (RFL) is the signature fundraiser for the American Cancer Society.

RFL is staffed and coordinated by volunteers in more than 5,200 communities and 27 countries. Volunteers give their time and effort because they believe it’s time to take action against cancer.

Everyone can join these events which bring the community together to remember loved ones lost, honor survivors of all cancers and raise money to help the American Cancer Society make a global impact on cancer.

One of the goals of Cullman area organizers was to have this Kick-Off event be a safe homecoming for past participants and an enticing introduction to newcomers to Relay For Life.

To that end, Helen Allen acted as Master of Ceremonies, expertly guiding the evening’s agenda smoothly forward:

• Welcome & Committee Introductions – Helen Allen

• Luminara & Touch of Hope – Tess Kimbrough
• Survivor Recognition – Jan Pierce

• Introduction of Speaker – Gary Cornelius
• Keynote ‘Hero of Hope’ Speaker – Lana Williams

You can watch Lana’s amazing and deeply touching testimonial about her family’s journey through their challenge with cancer:

The Agenda continued with:

• Team Recognition & Winners – Helen Allen
• Sponsor Recognition – LaWanna Latham
• Accounting – Michelle Kimbrough
• Spirit Points – Megan Isbell

• You’re The Reason – Gail Crutchfield
• CAN – Gary Cornelius
• How Relay Helps You – Haley Marcele
• Red Door Fundraiser & Closing – Helen Allen

Relay For Life is a team fundraising event where team members take turns walking around a track or designated path. Each event is 6-24 hours in length, and each team is asked to have a member on the track at all times to signify that cancer never sleeps. Cancer patients don’t stop because they’re tired, and for one night, neither do we.

Each team sets up a themed campsite at the event and continues their fundraising efforts by collecting donations for food, goods, games, and activities. This money will count towards their overall team fundraising goal.
