WINNER JESSIE GODBEE Cullman County Spelling Bee 2018

Jessie Godbee has won the 91st annual Cullman County Spelling Bee.

Artichoke’ was the winning word for Jessie.

After a grueling, multiple round series of word challenges, Jessie battled past twenty-two of the top young spelling minds in Cullman to win the title on the Temple Baptist Church stage on Monday evening.

Jessie represented Cullman Middle School.

Second place was taken by Abigail Kusz of Holly Pond Middle School; Willa Smith received the bronze representing West Elementary.

This venerable event is directed by the Cullman County Board of Education (CCBOE).

As seen above, the spelling bee includes students from County, City and Private schools from across Cullman.

The Spelling Bee moderator and head word caller was Margaret Guthrie. 

The Judges were Circuit Judge Gregory Nicholas, District Judge Rusty Turner, President/CEO of the Cullman Area Chamber of Commerce, Leah Bolin, and Cullman Attorney Champ Crocker.

Associated with the Scripps National Spelling Bee, this championship allows participants ranging from 3rd through 8th grade. Each member of the field won their home school’s recent spelling bee championship to qualify for the 2018 Cullman County Spelling Bee finals.  

Jessie Goodbee will now go on to the Alabama state spelling bee. This competition will be held at the 1st United Methodist Church in Alabaster on March 10, 2018. 

Should Jessie win there, she will be off to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Oxon Hill, MD. This is not far from Washington D.C.; it is held May 29 through 31. The overall national Scripps National Spelling Bee winners will receive a $40,000 cash prize, a savings bond, and reference books from Merriam-Webster and Encyclopedia Britannica.
