An Oral History of The Colony: Ethel Alexander

Around 3 pm Sunday, approximately 80 dignitaries from around the nation and esteemed residents of The Colony in southwestern Cullman County gathered at the town’s Educational Complex.

The occasion was the annual community celebration coinciding with national Black History Month.

Colony Mayor Donnis Leeth held the event to spotlight his community from its origins to present day:

“This Celebration tell folks how Colony was established, how blacks in this community survived before modern conveniences. Out history is our present. We covering from the beginning to present day this afternoon.”

Ethel Alexander is a historian with expertise in the early days of the Town of Colony.

Her significant knowledgebase is on display in this interview as she provides a truly fascinating (and at times stunning look) into the slave origins of this community forward to the present day:
