Grand Opening: Sportsman Lake Park – New Paved Walking Track

Cullman County elected officials, top County Parks personnel, and interested citizens were on hand at 10 am today at Sportsman Lake Park.

The occasion spotlighted months of planning, fundraising and hard construction work that has created an additional mile of paved walking/running track at the Park. This project also includes newly added lighting to enhance safety and nighttime illumination along the track.

Tony Glover of Cullman County Extension Office along with his staff was instrumental in securing funding for these park improvements from the Auburn University Trail Grant Program.

Cullman County Commission Chairman Kenneth Walker, Commissioners Garry Marchman, and Kerry Watson were in attendance along with Doug Davenport and Sara Teichmiller who head up the Cullman County Parks Department.

In the is interview and mobile tour of the new track, Davenport explains everything you need to know about this much needed and long awaited project:

Chairman Walker had these thoughts immediately after the ceremony:

“This is just another milestone for the Cullman County Parks and Recreation Department AND Sportsman Lake Park. With Tony Glover’s help, we can make these sorts of improvements much faster than we could on our own. I believe everyone who walks and runs on this track will be very pleased and impressed. It is nice!”
