Dreaming Big At Cullman Electric Cooperative

The Cullman Electric Cooperative played host to an unforgettable experience for all ages Thursday.

What could be unforgettable about an electric utility?

Well, several things:

First, the Coop opened its doors to all Cullman residents for a free showing of the IMAX movie ‘Dream Big: Engineering Our World’ filmed by MacGillivray Freeman.

Right at 100 people filled the Coop conference room to capacity to watch this panoramic, high-production value documentary. Narrated by Academy Award winner Jeff Bridges, Dream Big held everyone’s close attention for the full 42 minutes.

All-you-can-eat movie popcorn and free drinks were a gracious touch from the Coop staff!

Dream Big is the first film of its kind for IMAX®. The goal of the movie was to transform how people think about engineering.

From the Great Wall of China and the world’s tallest buildings to underwater robots, solar cars and smart, sustainable cities, DREAM BIG celebrated the human ingenuity behind engineering marvels big and small, and shows how engineers push the limits of innovation in unexpected and surprising ways.

With its inspiring stories of human grit and aspiration and extraordinary visuals, DREAM BIG revealed the compassion and creativity that drive engineers – like those at Cullman Electric Cooperative – to create better lives for people and a more sustainable future for us all.

This movie was a FREE community event in conjunction with National Engineers Week and Girls Night Out. The Coop wished to encourage Cullman kids – boys AND girls – to DREAM BIG and to think about ways they can engineer a change in our world!

After the movie, the large crowd took a walking tour of the behind-the-scenes area of the Cullman Electric Cooperative to see just how they engineer the electrical system that brings power to our community.

Senior Systems Engineer – Justin Lee – was the Master of Ceremonies for a fascinating educational experience inside the usually hidden areas of the facility.

Stuffing a record number of people into the Coop’s Dispatching and Mapping center, Lee discussed the way the Coop sees and responds to electrical power outages:

Lee then took the large group into a second area where he had multiple props and an audio-visual presentation to further educate and explain the intricate, technical and expensive technology that goes into delivering electricity to your home and business.

While the tour was nirvana for engineering types, the material and visuals were accessible and informative for everyone.

The entire evening surely accomplished its goal of educating the public on the ways of the Cullman Electric Cooperative while simultaneously inspiring local young people into considering engineering as a career path.

Seeing the Coop from the inside out with a super smart, yet easily understood, Master of Ceremonies made the often intimidating and complicated world of electricity accessible. It engendered a new appreciation in all attendees for what the staff goes through on a daily basis to provide consistent, reliable electricity to Cullman County and beyond.
