Vehicle Finds Guardrail On Highway 278 East At Blount County Line

• VICTIM HEADED TO HUNTSVILLE HOSPITAL
• STRUCTURAL DAMAGE TO GUARDRAIL & POSSIBLY BRIDGE

Cullman e911 has dispatched emergency responders to a location on US Highway 278 East this morning.

The 911 caller reported a single vehicle had impacted the guardrail near the intersection of County Road 1742. This location is at the bridge over the Mulberry Fork of the Black Warrior River on the Cullman-Blount County line.

Holly Pond Volunteer Fire Department, Cullman EMS, and the Cullman County Sheriff’s Office have personnel active at the scene.

One occupant/patient appears to be vacillating between consciousness and unconsciousness. Air Evac Lifeteam helicopters are unavailable due to weather; the victim will be transported out via ground ambulance to Huntsville Hospital and their Level 1 Trauma facility.

There is structural damage to the guardrail and possibly to the bridge; the Cullman County Road Department is being called in to make an assessment and provide needed repairs. (ALDOT will likely end up being the responsible agency for that repair).

There is total road blockage in the eastbound lanes; westbound traffic is passing by with slowdown.

A Trooper with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency has just arrived; he will begin a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the mishap shortly.
