Cullman Named United States #5 Micropolitan Economic Area For 2017

For the fourth consecutive year, Cullman ranks in the Top 5 of all Micropolitan Economic Areas in the United States.

This ranking was made public this morning by the prestigious Site Selection magazine.

Cullman’s #5 ranking is down slightly from 2016 when we ranked #2.

Cullman ranks as a Top 20 micropolitan 13 times since the rankings started in 2001. These Site Selection Magazine rankings derive from the number of projects that meet specific criteria. Cullman had nine qualifying projects in 2017.

There are 550 Micropolitan Economic Areas in the US. To qualify in this category, a city’s population must fall between 10,000 to 50,000.

In addition to population, as mentioned above, the city must have ‘qualifying projects.’ A ‘Qualifying Project’ is defined as a new or expanding company must meet one of three criteria:

• A capital investment of more than $1 million
• Building construction of more than 20,000 square feet
• Creation of 20 new jobs

Pesky Findlay, Ohio, was ranked Number One again this year for the total number of qualifying new and expanding industrial projects. Findlay had 21 such ‘qualifying projects;

Batavia, New York came in second in the rankings followed by Wooster, Ohio (#3) and Shelby, NC (4).

Policon Rankings

Cullman also had a significant climb in the Policom Rankings, rising 113 spots from #229 in 2016 to 116 in 2017 out 550 micropolitans.

According to Cullman Economic Development Agency Director Dale Greer:

“Climbing the rankings so quickly indicates that our community is making great strides in providing a stronger economic base, a consistent economy that is healthier for business growth, and a higher standard of living for our citizens.

Being a top 150 micropolitan indicates that our citizens have access to more opportunities and a better quality of life that nearly 80% of similar sized communities. These strides are made by bringing higher paying jobs, providing quality community services, and giving high-quality community support to all types of local businesses.”

About Policon Rankings

Policom rankings are more than just a project count.

Policom addresses the condition of an economy from the viewpoint of its impact upon the “standard of living” of the people who live and work in an area.

Policom takes into account all economic growth including retail, government, construction, medical, and agriculture. Small business success is counted in the Policom. Policom also considers the wages Cullman workers make compared to other micropolitans.

Lastly, Policom considers negative economic factors such as the amount of money spent and people on welfare and other government assistance, which reflects poor economic growth. The combining of these three factors and measuring how consistently the economy has grown over a 10-year average is how the rankings are determined.
