Making A $50,000 Difference: Cullman Rotary Club Auction

“ROTARY: Making A Difference”

Dozens of Rotarians worked the main floor of the Cullman Civic Center Friday evening. Their job was simple, yet complex: Keep order and administrate a tightly choreographed silent AND live auction offering hundreds of simple-to-premium items.

Perfect weather welcomed a record number of attendees out to make bids and take home their winnings in the Cullman Rotary Club 45th annual fundraising auction.

All transactions from the event’s sales and supporting fundraising efforts will go directly to the Rotary Club’s many, many charitable initiatives around Cullman County.

While the final accounting is not available at the time of this report, Rotary Fundraising Chairman Eli Howard is hopeful for a record-setting donation total:

“This auction is our only fundraising event during the year. Speaking for all Rotary Club members, we are VERY appreciative and grateful of the support bestowed on us by the Cullman community. Last year’s auction brought in nearly $58,000 (a record amount). We put those funds right back to work across the community for important causes and organizations.”

The BIG winners in the well-publicized Rotary Raffle portion of the event took home:

Glock 9mm handgun
$500 CASH (donated by Merchants Bank of Alabama)

A partial list of the items up for auction and the folks who donated them can be seen below.

Cash and item donors from all over Cullman and surrounding counties participated according to longtime Rotary Club member Dale Greer:

“We have 70 or so Rotarians go out into the community once a year to ask for assistance with items for the auction. I am always very impressed with how gracious, giving, and supportive our donors are. We are extremely grateful for both their material support as well as their commitment to assisting the Rotary in sustaining our tradition of doing good works around the community.”

The Cullman Rotary Club has helped many, many people.

As an example, the Cullman Rotary Club donated $25,000 to the City of Cullman to re-plant hundreds of trees destroyed in the April 2011 tornadoes. Other recent Cullman area projects supported by Rotary throughout the year including:

• American Cancer Society
• Books for area school libraries

Cullman Rotary Club President Perry Shields had these thoughts about the event:

“After nine years in the Cullman Rotary Club, I am still amazed at the large turnout and support we get every year.

I want to acknowldge the crew from The Link of Cullman Country for helping us with food service. In addition, our two dozen or so Rotoract Club members from Wallace State have been both an inspiration and blessing. These high quality young adults are crucial to the success of this auction.

People should know that the monies we generate from this event sustain us and our charitable community efforts throughout the year. We are VERY grateful. Our motto is: ‘ROTARY: Making A Difference’. With everyone’s help tonight, we are doing exactly that.”
