A convicted felon with a gun was shot by an officer with the Hanceville Police Department at a drivers license checkpoint late Friday night.

The incident occurred at the intersection of Highway 91 and County Road 747 in the Center Hill community. This location is just north of the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament.

According to Hanceville Chief of Police Bob Long, around 11 pm a man pulled up to the check point but refused to display his Driver’s License.

As Hanceville police officers (who were familiar with the subject from past criminal interactions) tried to persuade the man out of the car, he drove off rapidly.

Officers fired multiple rounds of ammunition in an attempt to disable the vehicle and prevent a high-speed pursuit.

The subject’s exit included a brief, one-mile chase at approximately 70 mph coupled with an abrupt stop in the middle of the road that initiated a collision with a Hanceville Police patrol vehicle.

While being taken into custody, the man indicated he had been shot.

Medical personnel from Hanceville Fire & Rescue and Cullman EMS tended to his wounds later transporting him to Cullman Regional. He was then taken to UAB Medical Center where he was treated and released Saturday.

There was a female passenger in the eluding car as well as the subject driver; she was not physically injured in the incident.

The subject arrested was:

ERIC LAMAR CAFFEY (23) of Hanceville

Mr. Caffey was charged with a litany of criminal offenses in relation to the situation:

• Robbery
• Felon In Possession of a Firearm
• Theft of Property – 4th Degree
• Attempting To Elude
• Reckless Endangerment
• Possession of Marijuana – 1st Degree
• Possession of Drug Paraphernalia

Caffey was eventually transported to the Cullman County Detention Center where he remains at the time of this report on $46,000 worth of bonds.

Caffey is no stranger to run-ins with the law in the City of Hanceville. At the time of his arrest, Caffey was a suspect in a robbery case in Hanceville.

As with all Officer Involved incidents of this type, the Alabama Bureau of Investigation (ABI) is reviewing the circumstances surrounding this case.

The name(s) of the officers who participated in the driver’s license checkpoint and ensuing melee have not been made public.

Once their ABI investigation is complete, there will likely be more details and clarity on all the circumstances surrounding this incident.
