Multiple Cullman County emergency response agencies were dispatched by Cullman e911 to a field just south of Holly Pond Wednesday afternoon.

A 911 caller reported a small airplane down in a field along the 600-700 block of County Road 793.

A neighbor identified at least one occupant outside of the plane. The individual was conscious and walking around.

Perhaps miraculously, the pilot of this small aircraft down near Holly Pond will be OK.

The occupant’s official injury status was deemed NON-life threatening by first responders.

According to the Director of Cullman EMS – James Curtis – the pilot “sustained minor injuries. He will be transported to Cullman Regional via ambulance.”

The pilot was treated and released soon after being admitted to the ER.

The airplane was found by emergency responders upside down, seemingly in one piece.

Personnel from Holly Pond Volunteer Fire Department, a medical team from Cullman EMS, and a deputy from Cullman County Sheriff’s Office worked the scene.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. The FAA indicated the airplane lost power and flipped while landing in the grassy field.

Vicki Karolewics, President of Wallace State Community College, indicated the pilot was a student in that institution’s Aviation program.

Wallace State leases the airplanes used in the college’s program.

The airplane itself was a single-engine Cessna 152.
