GARLAN GUDGER, SR. Passes Away Today

Cullman City Councilman Johnny Cook announced the passing of a seemingly timeless and hugely well-respected icon in our community this evening: Garlan Gudger, Sr.

Cook led everyone in attendance tonight’s Cullman City Council meeting at City Hall in prayer supporting the Gudger family, saying:

“Mr. Gudger was a friend to all in this city … I hope you’ll join me in lifting up the Gudger family in prayer during this difficult time.”

A brief background on Dr. Garlan Gudger, Sr.:

He founded Southern Accents in 1969.

The business, which began in his garage, has grown into the largest architectural salvage business in the southeast. (http://www.sa1969.com/).

Gudger was an exceptional man in many ways.

Beyond his success in the architectural salvage field, he was a genuine medical miracle. He lived with diabetes for 65 years.

The Joslin Diabetes Center (which is part of the Harvard School of Medicine) honored Gudger for enduring the disease for over six decades, outliving all medical expectations.

Positively affecting thousands of lives, Gudger devoted 23 years of his life to Wallace State Community College as dean of students.

Dr. Gudger is also a member of the Cullman County Sports Hall of Fame.
