Rumors Deli: Delectable Dining
Service As Sweet As Their Tea

I’ll preface this article by saying I’ve been a longtime customer and completely biased. – Elizabeth McDowell

Rumors Deli food was my first meal after my first baby and my first meal after my last baby… this place is special.

As an insanely sizeable pregnant woman, they loaded my plate down with pickles. They made sure my sandwiches were steamed piping hot (since pregnant women aren’t supposed to eat cold deli meats). The care and attention to their customers are paramount.

Since moving into their new building located at 601 4th Street SW in Cullman, they have been met with an overwhelming response so much that they have provided additional parking.

As a busy mom, I’ve been thankful for their new location, as they now have a take-out window where you can pick up the orders you have called in.

Today, we had our usual assortment of tasty treats.

I’ve always been surprised that everyone talks about their peanut butter pie, but no one talks about the fantastic cookie bars. Maybe this is because peanut butter isn’t my thing but these cookie bars (Conversation Pieces) are perfect. We usually break all the rules and eat these first while waiting for the rest of our food to come to the table. My son goes for the edge pieces because he likes a crispy part but me, I go for extra chewy, soft & melty pieces.

After we finish dessert, we dig into the sandwiches – of which there are many – but the number one pick is the Mouth of the South. Piled high with turkey, ham and roast beef, topped with onions, olives, peppers, mushrooms, lettuce, tomatoes, three kinds of cheese, spicy mustard and their own special sauce, this sandwich pack a lot of flavor between its buns (that’s what she said!)

The meat is thinly sliced, salty and instantly contrasted with the crisp crunch of the pepper and like most of their sandwiches, it comes heated (not cold or toasted) on the most fluffy of hoagie rolls. But if you like toasted sandwiches, their Raspberry Turkey or Capri are my favorites. The Capri is vegetarian-friendly with a zesty pesto, soft gooey mozzarella, and fresh cut tomatoes.

Next up is the Snitch; it’s what two of my five kids always go for. And honestly, if she opened a restaurant just serving buckets of the meatballs and sauce to go, I’d be there in a heartbeat because hands down they are the best meatballs. The sauce is well balanced, not too sweet or sour, and chunky so there are nice bits of tomato in each bite.

For those who can’t take the heat, they have cold options like their salads, wraps, and a chicken salad croissant. I love the chicken salad on a bed of mixed greens with their honey ginger dressing. It’s an excellent way to have something light but filling on the hot summer days.

For our sides, we usually get their homemade potato salad or one of their many homemade soups. You will always catch me there on Tomato Bisque day because theirs is my favorite. It’s also a perfect dipping sauce for the Turkey Croissant sandwich.

They also serve breakfast and have a large variety of muffins. My other two picky eaters get the Turkey and Provolone croissant off the breakfast menu, but we get it for lunch. It’s an excellent sandwich for kids and at only $2.99 can’t be beat.

So get on down to Rumor’s Deli where you can ‘Eat here, Diet at home’ and I hope you come to love it and become a regular like I have.
